Login to your member account to read premium articles. Mon, 11/27/2017 - 7:00am | The News-Gazette The American Integrity leaves the Poe Lock, with the MacArthur Lock in the foreground, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. I am enjoying a basket of mouthwatering, freshly-caught whitefish filets, fries and slaw at the aptly named Lockview Restaurant as the hulking, black edifice of The American Integrity, a 1,000-foot lake freighter, looms across the expanse of windows of the second-story dining room. I watch as it eases itself into the Poe Lock. For self-proclaimed boat nerds, this is dinner and entertainment at its finest. In Sault (pronounced "Soo") Ste. Marie, a town whose daily rituals ebb and flow with the rise and fall of the waters that course through the Soo Locks, this event is repeated several times each day. In this age of miniaturization, watching major machinery go about its business is a spectator sport that is catered to in this river town. The 63-mile-long St. Mary's River is the only water connection between Lake Superior and the Great Lakes, connecting Superior to Lake Huron, and it includes a 21-foot drop in elevation at a nearly impassable, mile-long stretch of rocky rapids. In order to traverse this obstacle, vessels literally use a water-powered elevator. Three operational locks, one Canadian and two American, are located at the twin cities by name on the American-Canadian border. These liquid lifts are engineering marvels. The boat (all lake freighters are referred to as boats) will enter a chamber, gates are closed and, depending on whether it needs to raise or lower to continue on its way, water either flows in or out to carry it to the necessary level. There are no pumps; the locks are powered by gravity itself.

Organizer Melissa Cutler said the Feb. 25 event at Grand Gardens North will feature guest speakers, as well as a raffle table, door prize and games, along with discussion on mental illness. “It’s just going to be a fun night and, at the same time, we’re still sticking to the mental health topic, being open to ways we can change, as a community,” Cutler said. The mental health advocate, who speaks openly about her struggles, will address the dinner, along with “out of town guest speakers” who haven’t been identified yet. “I’m going to involve the crowd a lot more,” said Cutler, who plans to encourage the audience to pitch suggestions pertaining to how area mental health services can be improved as well as make other suggestions on this segment of health-care. Project Semicolon, stemming from an American woman's 2013 tattoo tribute to her father who took his own life, aims to encourage those dealing with depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury. Three-hundred tickets were sold for the debut dinner last January, held at Grand Gardens on Dennis Street. This time around, Cutler hopes to sell 400 for the larger venue. The first event was a solid, if not stressful, learning experience. “I was so stressed,” said Cutler, but added that this time around organizing duties have been a welcomed way to beat the Yuletide blues, which, she said, often dog folks with mental illness. “Christmas time is a very rough time for me … It affects my mental health severely,” said Cutler, also recovering from a broken leg that prevented her from appearing in Musical Comedy Guild’s November production of Anne of Green Gables. “People think Christmas time helps depression and people who struggle, but actually it’s worse.” Hitting the books has also helped, said the Sault College student, enrolled in the personal support worker program. “I think keeping my brain occupied with goals to do in the new year is going to help me,” she added. Tickets are $25 and available starting Jan. 1 from Cutler (705-255-3556, firstname.lastname@example.org) her friend Reyanna Sangestino (905-978-0792), Life's A Stitch (516 Queen St E., 705-254-3339) and Canadian Mental Health Association central access centre (705-759-5989). Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m.http://www.saultstar.com/2017/12/14/project-semicolon-ssm-dinnerfundraiser-promises-to-be-fun-and-information-filled-regarding-mental-health

Solar power has been around for a while and the popularity of this energy source increases with each year. Commercial and residential properties can reduce utility bills and they don't require much or any maintenance. Many people want to go green. The article that follows will give you solar energy information so you will better understand what it can do for you.
You don't have to go big to enjoy solar power. Buying some solar energy lights to use in landscape lighting can save power and help the planet. You can find them at your local hardware store or mass market retailer. They are as easy to install as any other garden light.
Try to get panels that don't completely rely on when the sun is up. Most newer panels will be able to store some energy while the sun is up. This will provide you with energy any time of the day. This is helpful if you use power in your home at nighttime.
If you would like to partially "go solar", think about smaller applications. There are two ways to do this. First, locate solar panels that can be mounted on windows so that you can get electronic devices recharged. The second is to look for solar equipment aimed at campers, such as lanterns and stoves. Each small step contributes to your financial savings.
Know that you can live in a cold and cloudy area and still benefit from solar energy! Direct sunlight and a certain temperature are not always requirements for reaping the benefits of solar energy. In all conditions, your solar panels can significantly benefit your home.
If you are able to afford the cost and the necessary space, a panel system that tracks the sun is your best bet for power generation. This type of system tracks the sun over the course of the day and during all seasons. Although this system costs more upfront, it will pay for itself over time.
In an effort to encourage citizens to use greener forms of energy, many governments agencies are offering rebates and tax credits for choosing solar energy. In some cases, the government will give you a rebate on the system, which helps to defer some of the initial cost. Seek out information online, and speak to someone in your area concerning programs that are available to you.
Check the inverter every so often if you add solar panels to your home. You want to find a green light that is not flashing. If the light blinks or is not on, you have to get a professional. It's almost impossible for most panel owners to diagnose problems. A visit from a technician should be free if you bought panels with a 25-year warranty, which is common.
Learn how much energy your household uses. This can give you a great idea of how well a solar energy unit can benefit your home. These facts are essential if you are to choose an appropriate sized solar power system. Examine your power bills for a year and find the average amount of energy consumed seasonally.
When you plan your home's solar energy conversion, choose the more convenient areas to begin with. You'll want to begin with smaller appliances so that you don't take on too much in the beginning. Gradually converting is going to help you with your commitment for the long term.
